SQA First Aid Paediatric Emergency

The Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid at SCQF level 6 will equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to administer paediatric first aid and assist them in gaining employment in a childcare environment.

Description

The Award develops basic skills in emergency paediatric first aid and focuses on the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider and on knowing how to deal with emergency situations safely.

Practical activities include:

  • providing first aid to a child who is unresponsive
  • providing first aid in choking situations
  • providing first aid to a child in shock
  • controlling external bleeding
  • administering first aid for bites, stings and minor injuries

This is a hands on course that includes physical elements such as demonstrating CPR on a manikin. You will also be required to kneel on the floor to carry out the practical assessments and we would ask that you dress accordingly.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider

  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally

  • Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking

  • Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury (small cuts, grazes, minor burns or scalds)

  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally

  • Be able to assess an incident

  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding

  • Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock

  • Be able to manage a casualty suffering from convulsions
