Problem Solving and Decision Making
This workshop is designed to help delegates to solve work-based problems and make decisions to bring value to both the organisation and its customers. With a focus on getting to the root cause of problems, delegates will be introduced to tools to help generate and assess a range of options in order to devise solutions that stick.
Description
To enable delegates to understand the process of working through work-based problems and understand how to identify root causes and how to generate a range of cost-effective solutions.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the process of rational decision making
- Identify a range of techniques that can be used to analyse the problem
- Use problem solving techniques to identify root causes and generate and assess a range of possible solutions
- Plan appropriate actions to resolve problems, ensuring commitment of stakeholders
Content
This workshop has a strong emphasis on practical skills. Delegates will contribute to group discussions as well as participate in a number of practical exercises. The content of the workshop includes:
- Defining terms (Problem solving and decision making defined, evidence-based decision making and non-evidence based decision making)
- Defining and analysing the problem (Creating a problem statement, analysing and understanding the problem, applying tools and techniques for problem identification and analysis)
- Getting to the root causes of the problem (collect data to understand the problem, identify and analyse possible causes, apply tools and techniques to determine the root cause)
- Generate alternative solutions (identify possible solutions, apply the tools and techniques for generating alternatives)
- Select the solution and make a decision! (determine a decision-making approach, develop criteria for selecting a solution, select the best solution)
- Implement the solution (develop an action plan, implement the solution and marshal support for the solution)
More Info
This programme is a one day course in which participants will use problem-solving process techniques to solve problems through a range of individual and group activities. Group discussions will be supported by “real plays” and case studies in order to ensure a lively and practically focused workshop.
